Three Pillars of Future Leaders’ Development

We live in a world that is hungry for good leaders at all levels: in businesses, politics, media and every-day life. In order to develop the next generation of leaders and prepare them for future challenges we need to start molding them today. This is, however, not a one-time activity, but rather a set of components that in blended approach can accelerate development of any emerging talent.

First of all, future leaders need to know themselves well: their strengths, their weaknesses and the best ways to utilize those insights in their career choices. This acute self-awareness can be developed at any age and is considered to be a common factor among the most successful people. In simpler terms: self-awareness enables us to effectively lead ourselves.

Once this crucial first step is achieved, emerging talent with their managers need to grasp the fact that unless they understand the DNA of their corporate social systems, they won’t be able to grow. Understanding a corporate culture essentially means teaching young people how to navigate the business context and build sustainable networks of key relationships very early in their careers. When it comes to developing effective leadership skills, it is actually social awareness that will determine whether they sink or swim.

And last but not least: once the emerging talent has acquired a firm understanding of both self- and social awareness, we need to allow them to practice how to lead in so called “risk free zones”. This developmental approach is focused on solutions that provide opportunities for early talent to learn in simulated business situations to grow the core set of leadership capabilities. We all know that the most valuable lessons in our personal and professional lives are generated from our mistakes and not our successes, so by building the space for talent to fail, we enable them to learn and grow much faster.
